The water pump is not subject to maintenance during its entire service life. If it loses its tightness or produces grinding sounds, then it must be replaced - repair is impossible.
Tip: The water pump may fail due to a leak. At first, it sometimes drips from the housing, but within a very short time, coolant flows out in large quantities. Therefore, if a leak is found in the pump, immediately take care of replacing it.
Removing the water pump
Drain the coolant into a container.
Loosen and remove the alternator polypin belt, see chapter «Generator».
Put the engine in the TDC position of the 1st cylinder.
Remove the front toothed belt cover and remove the belt.
In the 1.6 liter engine, additionally dismantle the rear toothed belt cover.
On 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines, unscrew the toothed belt tensioner from the oil pump.
Loosen the water pump mounting bolts and remove the water pump from the end of the engine.
Clean the sealing surface on the engine block.
On the water pump, lubricate the sealing surface and new O-ring with a small amount of silicone grease.
Install the water pump. Observe the installation position: the lug on the pump must match the corresponding opposite piece on the engine block.
When applying a toothed belt, be sure to take into account the valve timing.
Tension the toothed belt and check its tension.
Tightening torque for the water pump in the engine 1.6 l 8 Nm; in the engine 1.8 and 2.0 l - 25 Nm.
After installation, fill the cooling system and bleed.
