Maintenance work
To check the frost resistance of the coolant, you need a hydrometer. It measures the specific gravity of the liquid. Due to the difference in the addition of anti-corrosion agents, the specific gravity of individual antifreezes is not the same. To make an absolutely accurate measurement, you need a hydrometer set to filled with antifreeze. In case of doubt, subtract 2-3°C from the value obtained - the tolerance of the measurement.
Suck out some coolant from the expansion tank. The hydrometer should float freely in the liquid.
The hydrometer sinks more or less deeply depending on the specific gravity of the liquid.
Use the scale to determine the temperature up to which the frost protection is active.
Some devices have arrows by which you can determine the frost resistance of the coolant.
This device shows the concentration of antifreeze not with the help of a hydrometer rod floating in the liquid, but with two movable arrows.
Antifreeze control
Most often it turns out that the concentration of antifreeze is already insufficient. In this case, you need to add antifreeze. In the following table, we have shown the amount of liquid to be added in each case:
Substitute the tray and drain the amount of coolant given in the table.
If necessary, pre-clean the area around so that dirt does not get into the draining coolant, because. it must be used again.
Pour the appropriate amount of undiluted antifreeze
Reinstall the coolant hose.
At the end, add the drained coolant to the system.
Tips: Uncorked coolant gets old if left open. Therefore, pour it into a resealable container, label it and keep it away from children's hands.
Antifreeze is poisonous, so you can't just dump it down the drain. Instead, pour it into a special container and take it to a special waste collection point (Find out about the place of reception in the district administration).
Ethylene glycol in antifreeze has a high fluidity. This can lead to the fact that after adding a new antifreeze, leaky areas will appear, which until then were sealed with lime and rust deposits.
