Shocks while driving on the road extinguish the tires and springs. Shock absorbers, for their part, must suppress or dampen the vibration of the axles and the body. Therefore, it would be more correct to call them «vibration dampers».
On serial models, so-called twin-tube shock absorbers are installed. They consist of a working cylinder in which a working piston connected to a rod can slide up and down. The slave cylinder is surrounded by a second cylinder which serves as a reservoir for shock absorbing hydraulic oil. The piston moves in the cylinder with the springy movements of the wheel. The special oil, set in motion, is forced through the valves, which slows down the movement of the piston and, as a result, dampens the oscillations of each wheel.
