Handbrake cable — removal and installation (Opel Vectra B)

The handbrake cable consists of three sections. The short front section connects the handbrake lever to the compensator. The secondary left and right sections connect the compensator plate to the rear brakes. The short cables connect the rear of the handbrake to the levers on the rear brake shoes. Each section can be removed separately.

Removal

Front section of handbrake cable

1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands.

2. In the car, remove the handbrake protective cover and slide it along the handbrake lever.

3. Lower the handbrake lever and unscrew the adjusting nut from the front end of the handbrake cable.

4. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system.

5. Remove the heat shield to access the handbrake compensator plate.

6. Rotate the rear of the front section of the handbrake 90° and disconnect it from the compensator plate.

7. Remove the rubber seal from the underbody of the vehicle and remove the front section of the handbrake cable.

Secondary section of handbrake cable

1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Fully release the handbrake lever.

2. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system.

3. Remove the heat shield to access the handbrake cable compensator plate.

4. Move the compensator plate forward, then rotate the rear end of the front section of the handbrake cable 90° and disconnect the cable from the compensator.

5. Disconnect the rear portion of each cable from the rear short handbrake cables.



6. Release the handbrake cable from the mounting brackets and remove it from under the vehicle.

Rear section of handbrake cable

1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Fully release the handbrake lever.

2. Using a screwdriver as a lever, disconnect the clamp connecting the secondary and rear handbrake cables.

3. Disconnect the handbrake cable from the rear brake shoe lever.

Installation

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, but it is necessary to adjust the handbrake.
