1. Block the front wheel, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove the rear wheels and apply the handbrake.
2. On the front side of the handbrake cable, unscrew the adjustment nut on the handbrake lever stem and move it away from the compensator (photo).
3. On each side, disconnect the return spring from the lever on the shield, then disconnect the cable.
4. Spread the back of the cable housing away from the guide on the diagonal arm on both sides.
5. Bend back the intermediate brackets and release the cables.
6. Spread the front ends of the cable covers from the guides (photo) and disconnect the cables. Remove the cable assembly from under the vehicle.
7. Installation is in reverse order, but note that the shorter, black braided cable is installed on the right. Coat the plastic cable guides with some molybdenum paste. Finally, adjust the handbrake shoes and cable as described in Chapter 8, items 20-25.
