Transmission Overhaul — General Description (Opel Vectra A)

1. Transmission repair is a difficult task for a car enthusiast. In addition to removing and installing a large number of small parts, it is necessary to accurately measure the gaps between them and, if necessary, select gaskets of the correct thickness. Transmission components are often difficult to obtain and, in many cases, extremely expensive. Therefore, it is recommended to entrust the transmission overhaul to a specialist or purchase a rebuilt unit.

2. However, a car enthusiast with some experience can completely overhaul the transmission if he has some special tools. Work carefully and methodically so as not to miss anything.

3. The tools needed for rebuilding are circlip pliers, bearing pullers, a sliding hammer, a set of punches, a dial micrometer, and possibly a hydraulic press. You will also need a large, sturdy workbench and a vice.

4. During transmission removal, carefully record the orientation of each component to facilitate subsequent installation.

5. Before disassembling the transmission, try to identify which component is malfunctioning. Some problems may be closely related to certain transmission components - see Section Troubleshooting.
