Removal
1. Loosen the rear wheel bolts, block the front wheels, then jack up and support the rear of the vehicle on axle stands. Remove the wheels.
2. Remove the rear half of the exhaust system as described in Section 4C.
3. Disconnect the handbrake cables and their return springs from the handbrake control levers as described in Section 9.
4. Remove the handbrake cables from the brackets on the diagonal arms.
5. Remove the locking brackets and release the brake lines from the brackets on the trailing arms. Note that the brackets also support the ABS sensor wires (see illustration).

6. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the brake calipers and ABS sensor brackets from the brake support shields. Move the calipers and ABS sensor brackets to the side and tie them to the bottom of the car with twine or wire.
7. Working on each side of the car in turn, support the jack stand and then loosen and remove the bolt and washer securing the lower end of the shock absorber to the jack stand. Carefully lower the jack and remove it once the shock absorber has cleared the jack stand.
8. Disconnect the fuel outlet hose from the fuel filter located on the right side of the underbody in front of the fuel tank. Plug the open holes in the filter and hose to prevent further fuel loss and dirt from entering the system.
9. Support the rear plate of the rear suspension cross member with a jack, then unscrew and remove the two mounting bolts from the rear cross member beam.
10. Carefully lower the jack supporting the rear crossmember plate so that the suspension springs and their buffers can be removed. Note the correct orientation of the springs.
11. Ensure all related hoses, tubes, cables and wires are routed away from the rear suspension assembly.
12. Support the rear suspension assembly with a jack placed under the rear crossmember plate and loosen and remove the two front crossmember mounting bolts. Note that the bolts also pass through the crossmember mounting brackets.
13. Loosen and remove the two bolts securing the crossmember mounting brackets to the underbody. Then, with the help of an assistant, carefully lower the rear suspension assembly and remove it from under the vehicle (see illustration).

14. If necessary, disassemble the assembly as described in the relevant Chapters of this Section.
15. The front crossmember mount bushings can be replaced using a tube or socket, nut, bolt and washers. Wet the rear bushings with a little soapy water to make installation easier.
Installation
16. Position the rear suspension assembly under the rear of the vehicle and raise it using a jack positioned under the rear crossmember plate.
17. Install the two rear suspension front crossmember mounting bolts, making sure they pass through the crossmember mounting brackets, but do not tighten them completely at this stage.
18. Install the crossmember mounting bracket bolts to the underbody and tighten them to the specified torque, then tighten the two front crossmember mounting bolts to the specified torque.
19. If necessary, lower the jack supporting the rear crossmember plate and install the suspension springs and their buffers between the diagonal arms and the bottom.
20. Carefully raise the jack supporting the rear crossmember plate, then install the two rear crossmember beam mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified tightening torque Specifications. Remove the jack.
21. Connect the fuel outlet hose to the fuel filter and tighten the clamp screw.
22. Working on each side of the vehicle in turn, raise the diagonal arm with a jack so that the lower shock absorber mounting bolt (with washer) can be installed. Tighten the bolts to the specified tightening torque Specifications, then remove the jack.
23. Install the brake calipers and ABS sensor brackets to the brake backing plates and tighten the mounting bolts to the tightening torque specified in the Specifications.
24. Install the brake pipes into the brackets on the diagonal arms and secure them with clamps.
25. Install the handbrake cables into their brackets on the diagonal arms and connect the cable ends and return springs to the handbrake control levers. Check the cable adjustment as described in Section 9.
26. Install the rear half of the exhaust system as described in Section 4C.
27. Install the wheels and lower the car to the ground. Tighten the wheel bolts completely.
