Front airbags help soften the force of impact with the front of the vehicle for the driver and front passenger in some frontal collisions.

All vehicles are equipped with a driver's airbag, installed in the center of the steering wheel, and a front passenger airbag, located in the instrument panel.

Functioning

After the ignition is turned on, the airbag indicator light comes on in the instrument cluster. If the system is functioning normally, the airbag indicator light will go out after a few seconds.

Front airbags, in combination with seat belts, soften the force of impact to the head and upper torso, reducing the risk of serious injury. However, a deploying front airbag could cause facial injury and other minor injuries. Front airbags do not protect the lower body.

The front airbags are designed to deploy in severe frontal collisions, but they may deploy if the forces in another type of collision are similar to those in a more severe collision. They may also fail to deploy in some minor frontal collisions. Damage to the car (or the lack thereof) does not always activate the airbag system.

When the airbag deploys, there is a loud bang accompanied by the release of smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does not indicate a fire. However, take care not to inhale this smoke as it may cause respiratory irritation. If smoke inhalation does occur, you must immediately go into fresh air.

After deployment, the airbag deflates, which frees up forward visibility again.

Important Notes

Do not place any objects on the steering wheel airbag or instrument panel. Also, do not place any objects between the driver and the steering wheel or the passenger and the instrument panel. Such objects may become sources of danger if the airbag deploys.

Immediately after deployment, the airbag components will be very hot, so to avoid getting burned, do not touch them.

When the front airbag deploys, the windshield may be cracked.

Do not hang hangers or other hard objects on the hooks. In an accident, a foreign object could be thrown by the deploying airbag and injure the driver or passengers.

If the airbags have deployed, the airbag that deployed will no longer function and must be replaced by an Opel dealer. Also, if the front airbag has deployed, the seat belt with pre-tensioner must also be replaced, as they cannot be repaired.

The airbag system is not a replacement for seat belts, but is part of the overall concept of passive safety of the vehicle, so seat belts must always be properly fastened.

Airbag Emergency Warning Light (SRS)

An emergency airbag warning light located in the instrument cluster monitors the chains of the front airbags and seat belt pre-tensioning mechanisms.

After turning the ignition switch key to the ON position, the airbag indicator light in the instrument cluster comes on. If the system is functioning normally, the airbag indicator light will go out after a few seconds.

Check your security system if:
  • When the ignition key is turned to the ON position, the indicator lamp does not come on for several seconds.
  • After the ignition is turned on, the indicator lamp continues to light for a long time.
  • The indicator lamp lights up while the vehicle is moving.

In a vehicle with front airbags, it is not recommended to transport children in the front seat, even when using a child seat. Experience shows that the safest way to transport children is in the back seat in an additionally installed child seat.

The presence of a front passenger airbag is indicated by a sticker with the inscription "Airbaq", located on the end of the instrument panel and visible after opening the door.
