Maintenance work
The protective layer on the bottom of the car must be carefully checked and, where necessary, corrected. You can do this yourself if you have a reliable Vectra lifting tool (lifting platform, ramp). Underbody anti-corrosion coating is best purchased from your Opel dealer. Not all anti-corrosion underbody protection materials available in the commercial network are suitable for use on Opel models. For example, there may be problems with the adhesion of materials based on bitumen.
Rinse the underside of the vehicle thoroughly.
View the entire lower part with a bright lamp and find defective areas.
Clean damaged areas in the anti-corrosion coating of the bottom with a spatula, scraper and wire brush to bare metal.
Sand down to bare metal, as thoroughly as possible, rust deposits.
Coat the cleaned surface with zinc dust paint as a primer.
Flat or larger areas are best treated with smudged underbody protection material.
For work in hard-to-reach gaps and corners, it is better to use a spray gun with an anti-corrosion agent.
The best anti-corrosion coating with wax: it can be used as an additional preservation of the factory anti-corrosion coating of the PVC bottom, and for the treatment of repaired areas.
Tip: When spraying anti-corrosion coating, cover the brakes with a sheet of paper or synthetic film to avoid getting a cloud of grease on them.

Washing the bottom of the car
An effective and at the same time inexpensive way to care for the bottom of the car - especially in winter - is regular washing of the bottom with a strong jet of water. Salt in melt water and road dirt should not settle for a long time on the edges and in the corners of the bottom, because. they bind moisture. Already poorly accessible places never dry out completely, which, in the end, greatly contributes to the appearance of rust. Thanks to the front fender liner in the wheel wells, the front fenders are well protected. A crust of dirt can form in the following places:
- In a metal fold along the edge of the cutouts of the rear wheel arches.
- In the rear wheel arches.
- In the splash area from the rear wheels to the right and left of the trunk or body.
- Under the sides of the rear bumpers.
To wash the underside of a car, you need at least a hose with a sprayer. There are also curved atomizers (for example, ARA), from which you can spray the bottom of a standing car, while not getting too wet yourself. Best of all, some kind of steam jet unit, such as gas stations and car washes. Find out if there is such a self-service device near you.
Left: at the lower edges of the doors there are drain holes through which penetrating water can drain.
On right: The photo shows where the left rear water drain hose from the retractable roof is located.
Tip: Spilled salt deposits and moisture become especially aggressive as the temperature rises. Therefore, a car standing on the street is less affected by corrosion than one that was in a heated garage.
