Top dead center (TDC) of the piston of the first cylinder (Opel Vectra B)

The top dead center (TDC) of a piston is the point through which each piston passes as the crankshaft rotates. Each piston reaches the TDC position at the end of the compression stroke, then again at the end of the exhaust stroke. The TDC of the piston of the first cylinder is used to set the engine timing mechanism.

1. Make sure the ignition is off. Remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, then remove the spark plugs.

2. To access the timing mark on the camshaft pulley, remove the upper timing belt cover.



3. Turn the engine with a wrench on the crankshaft pulley until the timing mark on the camshaft pulley aligns with the indicator located on the rear timing belt cover.

4. In this case, the mark on the crankshaft pulley (A) should be aligned with the pointer (B) on the lower toothed belt cover.
