Soch 1.6L engines
Warning: When installing the thermostat, a new sealing ring must be installed.
Removal
1. Remove the ground cable from the battery.
2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
3. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the upper hose from the thermostat housing on the right side of the engine.
4. Remove the timing belt, idler pulley, camshaft pulley and rear timing belt cover.
5. Unscrew the bolts and remove the thermostat cover from the cylinder head.
6. Remove the thermostat from the housing and remove the sealing ring.
Examination

A rough check of the thermostat can be done by hanging it on a thread in a glass vessel filled with water and heating the water to boiling. When the water boils, the thermostat should open. Otherwise, replace it.
The thermostat opening temperature is marked on the thermostat.
A thermostat that does not close when the water cools also needs to be replaced.
Installation
1. Clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat cover and cylinder head.
2. Install the thermostat into the cylinder head with a new sealing ring.
3. Install the thermostat cover and secure with bolts.

4. Install the rear timing belt cover, camshaft pulley, timing belt and idler pulley.
5. Connect the top hose to the thermostat and secure with a clamp.
6. Fill the cooling system with coolant.
7. Connect the battery.

Removal
1. Remove the ground cable from the battery.
2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
3. Loosen the clamp and remove the upper hose from the thermostat cover. On 1.6L engines, the thermostat cover is mounted to a housing bolted to the front end of the engine. On 1.8L and 2.0L engines, the thermostat cover is bolted directly to the cylinder head. This requires removing an additional small hose.

4. Unscrew the bolts and remove the thermostat cover, in which the thermostat is fixed (in the photo - thermostat of the DOCH 1.6 l petrol engine).

5. On 1.6L engines, remove the sealing ring.
6. On 1.8L and 2.0L engines, remove the gasket.
