1.6L soch engines
Warning! When installing the thermostat, a new O-ring must be installed.
Removing
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
3. Loosen the clamp and disconnect the upper hose from the thermostat housing on the right side of the engine.
4. Remove the toothed belt, idler pulley, camshaft pulley and rear toothed belt guard.
5. Unscrew the bolts and remove the thermostat cover from the cylinder head.
6. Remove the thermostat from the casing and remove the sealing ring.
Examination
A rough test of the thermostat can be done by hanging it from a thread in a glass vessel filled with water and heating the water to a boil. When the water boils, the thermostat should open. Otherwise, replace it.
The thermostat opening temperature is marked on the thermostat.
A thermostat that does not close when the water cools should also be replaced.
Installation
1. Clean the mating surfaces of the thermostat cover and cylinder head.
2. Install the thermostat in the cylinder head with a new O-ring.
3. Install the thermostat cover and secure with screws.
4. Install the rear timing belt cover, camshaft pulley, timing belt and idler pulley.
5. Connect the top hose to the thermostat and secure with a clamp.
6. Pour coolant into the cooling system.
7. Connect the battery.
Doch 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 L petrol engines
Removing
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
3. Loosen the clamp and remove the upper hose from the thermostat cover. On 1.6L engines, the thermostat cover is mounted to a housing bolted to the front end of the engine. On 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines, the thermostat cover is bolted directly to the cylinder head. In this case, an additional small hose must be removed.
4. Unscrew the bolts and remove the thermostat cover, in which the thermostat is fixed (in the photo - the thermostat of the gasoline engine DOCH 1.6 l).
5. On 1.6L engines, remove the O-ring.
6. On engines 1.8 or 2.0 liters, remove the gasket.
