Visual search for oil leaks (Opel Vectra A)

If the engine consumes increased oil, first of all it is necessary to check for leaks as follows.

Remove the camshaft housing cover and check the gasket for cracks and damage.

Check the ventilation hose running from the cylinder head cover to the air filter for secure fastening.

Check the gasket between the camshaft housing and the cylinder block (16-valve engine).

Check the connection of the ignition distributor to the camshaft housing.

Check the oil filter, its gasket and flange.

Check the oil pressure sensor (sealing ring).

Check the oil drain plug (sealing ring).

Check the oil pan gasket.

Check the front and rear camshaft and crankshaft seals.

Locating leaks through which oil flows in an engine can often be quite difficult. Therefore, the following procedure is suggested for their determination.

Wash the engine with a water solution of detergent. First cover the ignition distributor and generator with polyethylene film.

Sprinkle talc on the joints and seals on the engine (outside).

Check the oil level and top up if necessary.

Make a trip of about 30 km at high speed.
