Visual inspection and cleaning of the connecting rod and piston group (Opel Insignia A)

Connecting rods

1. Clean the connecting rods in solvent and dry with compressed air.

Caution: When using compressed air, it is necessary to wear protective glasses to prevent foreign particles from entering the eyes.

2. Check the connecting rods for:

• visible twisting or bending, cracks or thinning;
• scratches or abrasive wear of the connecting rod bearing mounting surfaces.

Pistons

1. Clean the piston with solvent. Do not use a brush with hard bristles to clean the piston.

2. Clean the piston ring grooves.



3. Check the piston for:

• cracks in piston ring grooves, on the skirt or bosses;
• thinning of piston ring grooves;
• eroded areas of the piston crown (1);
• piston skirt damage (2);
• excessive wear of the piston pin holes (3).

4. If any defects are found, replace the piston with a new one.

5. Measure the clearance between the piston pin and the hole in the piston.
