The following describes the removal and installation of the coolant pump for all engines except the 1.7L turbocharged diesel engine (procedures for this engine are described at the end of the section).

Note: The presence of liquid droplets or traces of vapor at the coolant pump air bleed hole should not cause concern unless it leads to more significant fluid loss.

Removal

Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Drain the coolant into a container. Then immediately connect and secure the hose.

Remove the V-belt.

Remove the front timing belt cover.

Loosen the timing belt.

Loosen the coolant pump mounting bolts and remove the pump.

Installation

Clean the mating surfaces of the pump and cylinder block.

To prevent corrosion of the pump, it is necessary to lubricate the mating surfaces with silicone grease, for example Opel 1970206 (901763530). A rusted pump prevents it from turning to tension the toothed belt.

Install the coolant pump with a new gasket onto the cylinder block.

Attention! Screw in the bolts by hand.

Put on and tighten the timing belt.

Tighten the pump mounting bolts: for 1.4 and 1.6 l engines - to a torque of 8 Nm (M6 bolts), for 1.7, 1.8 and 2.0 l engines - to a torque of 25 Nm (M8 bolts).

Install the front timing belt cover.

Put on and tighten the V-belt.

Fill with coolant.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.
