Removal

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Raise the car with a jack and secure it on stands under the bridge.

On models with a catalytic converter, remove the nuts and remove the exhaust manifold center section heat shield.

Note the length of exposed thread on the handbrake cable adjuster, then remove the nut to disconnect the cable bracket from the handbrake lever rod.

Disconnect the cable bracket from the rod and remove the rubber seal from the bottom of the body and the drive rod.

Remove the center control console as shown in chapter 12.

Carefully lift the carpet around the handbrake lever housing to expose the two handbrake lever mounting bolts.

Loosen the bolts and remove the handbrake lever so that the "ON" warning light switch wire can be pulled out.

Disconnect the wire and remove the handbrake lever and rod.

Repair

The worn ratchet segment can be replaced by removing the fastening sleeve from the handbrake lever using a metal rod or bolt of the required diameter.

Screw in a new bushing (comes with a new segment) into the lever to provide a small gap between the segment and the lever.

The handbrake warning light switch "ON" can be removed after the bolt is disconnected.

Installation

Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.

Install the seat as shown in chapter 11.

Install a new self-locking nut to secure the handbrake cable bracket to the rod and tighten the nut back to the same position it was in before removal.

Before lowering the vehicle to the ground, adjust the handbrake as described in the previous section.
