Models with rear drum brakes
Removing
Handbrake assembly contains two cables (one goes to each of the rear brakes), attached to the handbrake link arm. Both cables cannot be removed individually, and therefore the entire set must be removed as one unit.
Jack up the car and secure it on stands under the bridge.
On models with a catalytic converter, unscrew the nuts and remove the heat shield of the center section of the exhaust line.
Notice the exposed thread split on the now accessible handbrake cable adjuster, then remove the adjuster nut so you can disengage the cable bracket from the handbrake lever linkage.
Disconnect the cable bracket from the tie rod.
Remove the brake pads and disconnect the handbrake cables from the brake pads as described above in the appropriate section.
Use pliers to remove the clips that secure the handbrake cables to the brake pads (pic. 9.29.).
Disconnect the cables from the guides on the underbody and rear suspension.
Remove the cable assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
Make sure that the cables run in the same way as before removal.
Install the brake pads as described in the appropriate section above.
Install a new self-locking nut to secure the handbrake cable bracket to the linkage, and screw the nut in the same position it was in before removal.
Before installing the road wheels and lowering the vehicle to the ground, adjust the handbrake.
Models with rear disc brakes
Removing
The operation procedure is the same as for models with rear drum brakes, subject to the following.
Please note that in this case there is no locking plate for attaching the handbrake cable to the brake pad support disc, however, it is necessary to unhook the return spring from the end of the cable.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.
Make sure that the cables run the same way as before before removal.
Install a new self-locking nut to attach the handbrake cable bracket to the linkage, and tighten the nut on the linkage to the same position it was in before removal.
Before installing the road wheels and lowering the vehicle to the ground, adjust the handbrake.
