Starting a cold engine (Opel Vectra B)

On 1.7 engines, a thermostatic capsule is installed in the fuel pump, which controls the cold engine and reduces emissions of harmful substances in the exhaust gases. The thermostatic capsule contains an element that expands depending on the coolant temperature and changes the moment of fuel injection, increasing the speed of the cold engine by 150 rpm.

On 2.0L engines, idle speed and fuel injection timing are determined by the ECU.

Adjustment

1. Warm up the engine to operating temperature, check the idle speed and cool the engine.



2. On a cold engine, check the clearance between the adjustment screw and the fuel pump control lever. At a coolant temperature of 20°C, the clearance should be between 0.8 and 1.1 mm.



3. To adjust the clearance, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw to set the required clearance, then install the lock nut.



4. Start the engine and check the idle speed. If the idle speed is different from the required one, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw to set the required speed, then tighten the lock nut.

5. Warm up the engine and check the idle speed. During the engine warm-up, the gap between the adjusting screw and the fuel pump control lever should gradually decrease until the screw makes full contact with the lever. Otherwise, there is damage to the cold start system of the engine and it is necessary to repair it at the maintenance stage.
