1.7L engines
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery. Unscrew the pipelines supplying fuel to the fuel injectors of the first and second cylinders.
2. Unscrew the plug located between the fuel supply pipes to the injectors on the back of the fuel pump.
3. Release the cold start mechanism by passing a screwdriver through the two holes in the lever and turning the lever.
4. Set the piston of the first cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke, then turn the engine crankshaft back a quarter of a turn.
5. Screw the adapter together with the dial indicator into the plug socket.
6. Slowly turn the crankshaft in both directions and, observing the indicator readings, set the fuel pump piston to bottom dead center. Set the indicator needle to 0.
7. Slowly turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer.
8. Take readings with a dial indicator, and the value on the indicator must correspond to that given in the technical specifications. If adjustment is necessary, loosen the fuel pump mounting bolts and nuts and slowly turn the pump housing until the dial indicator shows the desired value. In this position, tighten the fuel pump mounting bolts and nuts.
9. Rotate the engine crankshaft 3/4 turn clockwise. Slowly turning the crankshaft back and forth and observing the dial gauge, determine when the fuel pump piston is at bottom dead center and set the dial to 0.
10. Slowly turn the engine crankshaft clockwise until the timing mark of the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the pointer and check the fuel injection timing.
11. Unscrew the adapter with the dial indicator and remove the screwdriver from the cold start mechanism
12. Screw the plug into the back of the fuel pump.
