Removal
1. While working in the engine compartment, loosen the tie bolt securing the gear selector rod to the rod.
2. Remove the gear shift lever (Chapter 5).
3. Remove the front part of the central console as described in Section 11.
4. Remove the four bolts securing the gearshift lever cover to the floor.
5. Remove the selector housing and shaft assembly. Move the assembly toward the rear of the vehicle and pass the selector shaft through the bulkhead, having an assistant remove the clamp from the end of the shaft (in the engine compartment), so as not to damage the rubber cuff in the partition.
6. If necessary, replace the rubber seal by pushing it out of the bulkhead and installing a new one in its place.
Installation
7. The gear selector rod bushing in the gearshift lever housing can be replaced by sliding the rod away from the housing. Using a screwdriver as a lever, pry the bushing assembly out of the lever housing, then remove the bushing from its housing. Install in reverse order, lubricating the inside of the bushing with a small amount of silicone grease.
8. Installation of the lever rod/housing assembly is carried out in the reverse order, but before tightening the selector rod clamp bolt, adjust the selector rod as described in Chapter 2.
