Set the wheels straight.
Turn the steering wheel in different directions through an open window outside the car, observing the wheel. The play should not exceed 25 mm.
If the play is greater, check the steering rods, steering gear and play in the steering rod ends.
Shake the steering rods vigorously. There should be no play in the ends, otherwise the ends or rods should be replaced.
