Gearbox - visual leak test
Leaks are possible in the following places:
- at the junction between the cylinder block and the gearbox (flywheel seal/gearbox shaft seal),
- at the junction of the gearbox and the axle shafts of the front wheel drive,
- on the oil filler plug.
To locate leaks, do the following:
1. Clean the gearbox housing with a cold cleaner.
2. Sprinkle lime or talc on suspected leaks.
3. Carry out a test drive. Since the fluidity of the oil increases when the engine heats up and it seeps faster in places where tightness is broken, the length of the test drive should be about 30 km.
Attention! Jacking up a vehicle or placing it on jack stands is dangerous. Therefore, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the safety precautions outlined in chapter «car jacking».
4. Place the vehicle on stands.
5. Inspect the gearbox by lighting it with a flashlight and locate leaks.
6. Eliminate leaks and add oil to the gearbox.
Rubber cuffs of CV joints - check
7. Place the vehicle on jack stands.
8. Check, by illuminating with a flashlight, the condition of the rubber of the cuffs of the CV joints. Pay special attention to the presence of porosity and cracks. When examining the cuffs, try not to deform them. If the cuff is torn, replace it immediately (see illustration).
If the cuff is bent inward due to the formation of low pressure or has other defects, then it must also be replaced.
Pay special attention to traces of grease on the cuff and on the parts adjacent to it.
9. Check up a condition and an inhaling of collars of fastening of cuffs.
10. Lower the car on wheels.
