Checking the coolant level
The coolant level should be checked regularly, approximately every 4 weeks and at least before any long trip. To replenish the coolant, also in the warm season, a mixture of antifreeze and distilled water should be used.
Attention! In emergency situations, especially in summer, clean water can be poured into the cooling system. However, then, as soon as possible, it is necessary to bring the concentration of antifreeze and anti-corrosion agent in the coolant to the required level.
Coolant level when engine is cold (coolant temperature approx. +20°C) should be just slightly above the KALT mark on the expansion tank (see arrow in illustration 10.0). If this level is lower, then liquid should be added to the tank.
Attention! To avoid engine damage, top up large amounts of cold coolant only when the engine is cold.
Attention! With a hot engine, place a thick cloth over the filler cap before removing the radiator filler cap to prevent burns from hot coolant or steam. Remove the cap only when the coolant temperature is below +90°C.
1. Slightly unscrew the cap of the expansion tank to relieve excess pressure, and then unscrew the cap completely and remove it.
If the fluid level drops sharply within a short time, inspect the system to check for leaks.
