The engine uses a valve timing mechanism with an overhead camshaft installed in a separate housing secured to the top of the cylinder head. The camshaft is driven by a toothed belt from the crankshaft pulley.

Number of teeth:
  • engines "13N", "13S": 104;
  • other engines: 111.

On engines "13N", "13S", "16S", "18E", "14NV", "16SV" (until June 1990.) the tension of the toothed belt is adjusted by turning the water pump housing. On engines "14NV", "16SV", "C16NZ" since July 1990, and also on engines "18SE", "20NE", "C20NE", "20SEH", "20XE" toothed belt tension is adjusted automatically by a tension roller.

Camshaft



The camshaft is cast iron, overhead, and is installed in a removable housing secured to the top of the cylinder head. The shaft is mounted on five bearings.
