Technical characteristics of the cooling system (Opel Kadett E)

The car uses a liquid engine cooling system with forced circulation of liquid using a centrifugal water pump. The cooling system includes a thermostat, radiator, expansion tank and electric fan.

Radiator

Radiator with aluminum tubes.

Color of the gasket and index of the radiator cap (engines "13N", "13S", "16S", "18E"): blue 90 108 850.

Opening pressure of the safety valve plug, kg/cm²:

• engine "20XE": 1.20-1.50;
• other engines: 1.20-1.35.

Cooling surface area of tubes, cm²:

• engines "13N", "13S": 1380;
• engine "14NV": 1690;
• engines "16S", "18E", "18SE" and cars with engine "13S" and automatic transmission: 1914;
• engines "16SV", "C16NZ", "20NE", "C20NE": 2000,
• engine "20XE": 1930.

Water pump

The centrifugal pump is driven by a toothed belt from the camshaft drive. The belt tension is adjusted by turning the pump housing.

Generator drive belt tension, kgf:

• new: 45;
• used: 25-30.

Thermostat

Thermostat with throttle (engines "13N", "13S") or bypass (engines of other models) valve is installed in the box. Marking:

• engines "13N", "13S": 92;
• other engines 91C 195F.

Valve opening start temperature,°C:

• engines "16S", "18E": 91,
• engines of other models: 92.

Temperature of full valve opening,°C:

• engines "16S", "18E": 103;
• engines of other models: 107.

Fan

The electric fan has a plastic four-blade impeller mounted on the shaft of the electric motor, switching on (at a coolant temperature of 97°C for engines "13N", "13S", "16S", "18E" and 100°C for other engines) and shutdown (at 93°C for engines "13N", "13S", "14NV", "16S", "18E" and 95°C for other engines) is carried out from the electric fan switch sensor.

Engine cooling and cabin heating system capacity, l:

• engines "13N", "13S": 7.0;
• engine "16S": 7.7,
• engine "14NV": 5.6;
• engines "16SV", "C16NZ": 5.8;
• engines "18E", "18SE": 7.5;
• engines "20NE", "C20NE", "20SEH": 7,2;
• engine "20XE": 6.9.

Coolant to be used: a mixture of distilled water and Opel antifreeze type 1940681 or 90019368 (boiling point 125°C) in the following proportions depending on the ambient temperature:

• at -10°C: 80% and 20%;
• at -20°C: 66% and 34%;
• at -30°C: 56% and 44%;
• at -40°C: 48% and 52%.

The coolant is filled for the entire service life of the car. Periodically check the fluid level and, if necessary, bring it up to standard.
