Removing
1. Turn out bolts of fastening and remove a cover of a head of cylinders.
2. Remove the toothed belt from the camshaft gear (see Section Removing and installing timing belt).
3. Remove the camshaft gear (see Section Removal and installation of the oil pan).
4. Turn out the top bolts of fastening of a back cover of a gear belt.
5. Give bolts of fastening and remove covers of bearings of a camshaft. In this case, unscrew all the bolts in the specified in the accompanying illustration sequences first 1/2 and then 1 turn and then turn them out completely. Remove bearing caps.

6. Remove the camshaft, evenly separating it from the seats.
7. Carefully remove the camshaft seal.
Examination
1. Carefully examine the condition of the bearing journals and camshaft cams. Replace shaft if scored or scratched. Also check the condition of the working surfaces of the plain bearings in the bearings of the gas distribution mechanism housing. Damaged and worn bearings can be replaced.
2. Having laid the camshaft in prisms, determine the value of its radial runout (on bearing journals) using a plunger-type dial gauge. When the measurement results are out of range (see Specifications in Chapter Engines) the camshaft must be replaced.
3. The camshaft oil seal is also subject to mandatory replacement.
4. Assess the degree of wear and the general condition of the working surfaces of the valve drive levers in contact with the camshaft cams. In case of detection of cracks, cavities, furrows and scuffs, the levers should be replaced.
5. Check up a condition of a persistent plate of a camshaft, in case of need make replacement.
With increased axial play of the shaft, the plate must also be replaced.
Installation
1. Before installing the camshaft, set all pistons to the same height. To do this, turn the crankshaft 90 degrees. forward or backward from the position corresponding to the TDC of the piston of the first cylinder.
2. Lubricate the sliding surfaces of the poppets with MoS2 grease.
3. Lubricate all bearing surfaces on the camshaft and cylinder head with engine oil.
4. Reinstall the camshaft. Make sure the pin is facing up.
The camshaft pin must be facing up when installing
5. Lubricate the mating surfaces of the first camshaft bearing (from the toothed belt) on the cylinder head with sealant, eg OPEL 15 03 294. Be careful not to get sealant on the cams.

6. Reinstall the camshaft bearing caps.
7. Tighten the bearing cap bolts in several stages in reverse order indicated in the illustration with effort 15 Nm.
In this case, the piston of the first cylinder must not be in the TDC position, otherwise there is a risk of damage to the camshaft.
8. Install a new oil seal using a mandrel, having previously lubricated it with impellent oil.
9. Install the camshaft gear.
10. Set the crankshaft to the position corresponding to the TDC of the piston of the first cylinder (see Section Procedures for repairing diesel engines without removing them from the vehicle).
11. Install the toothed belt (see Section Removing and installing timing belt).
12. Check valve clearance (see chapter Vehicle settings and routine maintenance).
13. Install the cylinder head cover with a new gasket, and tighten the mounting bolts with force 8 Nm.
