To maintain the vehicle's stability and handling characteristics, rear shock absorbers should be replaced in pairs.
Removal
1. Support the front wheels with wheel chocks, jack up the rear of the car and place it on supports. Remove the rear wheels.
2. On station wagon models, equipped with a rear ride height adjustment system, remove the cover of the right rear combination lamp in the luggage compartment and release the pressure from the system through the valve. Disconnect the air tube from the shock absorber.
3. Support the corresponding longitudinal arm of the rear beam with a trolley jack.
4. Unscrew the lower bolt securing the shock absorber to the lever.
5. While holding the shock absorber, remove the upper mounting bolt. Release the shock absorber from the upper support bracket.
Examination
1. Clamp the lower shock absorber support bracket in a vice with soft jaws and rock the piston rod from stop to stop several times. Any disturbances in the smoothness of the piston rod movement indicate the need to replace both shock absorbers.
2. Assess the degree of wear of the rubber-metal bushings of the shock absorber; if necessary, replace both shock absorbers.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling the components.
1. Ensure that all fasteners are tightened to the specified torque. On models equipped with rear ride height adjustment, charge the system with an overpressure of 0.8 bar, then, if necessary, adjust the pressure according to the degree of vehicle loading.
