The following items are especially important in the list of precautions:
When working on the airbag, disconnect the battery and additionally insulate the negative pole.
Disconnect in addition a socket under facing of a steering wheel.
Wait one minute for the capacitor to discharge before starting work.
Do not leave the airbag unattended during a break in work.
Lay the airbag module only with the impact plate (upholstered plate) up.
When welding on a vehicle, disconnect the battery. Locate the pole terminal of the welding machine directly near the welding site. Just in case, disconnect the control unit from the wires and disconnect the plug connection to the gas generator.
Never measure the airbag module with a test light, voltmeter, or ohmmeter. The test current may be too strong and cause the airbag to deploy unintentionally.
After an accident, replace all system components.
Dispose of the car only in accordance with the instructions!
Left: determine the middle position of the contact module. capture (3) in contact module (2) turn counterclockwise until you feel resistance. Then turn right 21/2 turns so that the arrow marks (1) matched with each other.
On right: after dismantling the airbag module and the steering wheel, access to the contact module is opened (arrow).
Removing the steering wheel
Only an experienced motorist can recommend dismantling the steering wheel in a car with an airbag. Anyone who is unsure of his abilities should entrust this work to a car repair shop.
Be sure to follow the safety instructions.
Disconnect the battery wire connected to ground.
Before working on the airbag, wait 1 minute for the capacitor in the starter to discharge.
Bring the front wheels into a straight-ahead position so that the steering wheel spokes are symmetrical. Mark the mounting position of the steering wheel in relation to the steering column trim with paint or chalk.
Remove facing of a steering column.
Turn the steering wheel from the straight position 90°to the right. Unscrew the mounting bolt of the airbag module on the back of the steering wheel.
Turn the steering wheel half a turn back and unscrew the second bolt on the back of the steering wheel.
Set the steering wheel straight again.
Carefully lift up the air bag module, disconnect the wire connector at the back of the gas generator.
Remove the airbag module.
Carefully lay down the airbag module with the impact plate (upholstered plate) up.
Take out from an arm on a steering column a socket of wires of the contact module fixed behind a steering wheel, and disconnect it. Note the location of the wires.
Disconnect the horn wire connector.
Bend back the steering column nut guard and unscrew the nut.
Mark the mounting position of the steering wheel relative to the steering shaft.
With jerks, remove the steering wheel from the teeth of the steering column.
If it does not come off, pull hard on the steering wheel while the assistant applies with a bolt «dry» hitting the steering column with a hammer. Please note that further attempts may damage the steering column.
If the steering wheel sits very firmly on the teeth of the steering column, the Opel workshop uses a special tool KM-210-A. With this puller, the steering wheel is pressed from the steering column.
Lightly grease the sliding surface of the contact finger of the horn before mounting.
Be sure to check that the contact module behind the steering wheel is in the middle position.
Check the middle position: turn the grip in the contact module to the right until a noticeable increase in resistance. Then turn 2.5-2.7 turns back so that both arrows of the marking coincide with each other, see figure at the top left.
In the straight position of the wheels, put on the steering column the steering wheel together with the contact element. In this case, the guide rod of the lever switch must enter the guide in the contact element.
Follow the symmetrical arrangement of the spokes, the pre-applied marks must match.
Screw the steering wheel (25 Nm), secure the nut by bending the lock washer.
Connect the connector of the horn contact wire and fix it in the recess on the steering wheel.
Connect the wire connector of the contact module and insert into the bracket on the steering column.
Install the airbag module.
Left: after dismantling the wheel arch, the upper mounting bolts of the suspension strut become accessible (arrows).
On right: at the bottom, the suspension strut is screwed to the trailing arm.
