The following points are especially important in the list of precautions:
When working on the airbag, disconnect the battery and additionally insulate the negative terminal.
Additionally, disconnect the connector under the steering wheel trim.
Wait one minute for the capacitor to discharge before starting work.
Do not leave the airbag unattended during breaks in work.
Place the airbag module only with the impact plate facing up (plate with soft upholstery) up.
When welding on a vehicle, disconnect the battery. Place the welding machine pole terminal directly next to the welding site. Just in case, disconnect the control unit from the wires and disconnect the plug connection to the gas generator.
Never measure the airbag module with a test lamp, voltmeter, or ohmmeter. The test current may be too high and cause the airbag to deploy unintentionally.
After an accident, replace all system components.
Dispose of the vehicle only in accordance with the instructions!
Left: determine the middle position of the contact module. Turn the grip (3) in the contact module (2) counterclockwise until you feel a noticeable resistance. Then turn it to the right by 21/2 turns so that the arrows of the marks (1) coincide with each other.
Right: after removing the airbag module and steering wheel, access to the contact module (arrow) becomes available.
Removal the steering wheel
Only an experienced car enthusiast can be recommended to remove the steering wheel in a car with an airbag. Those who are not confident in their abilities should entrust this work to a car repair shop.
Be sure to follow the safety instructions.
Disconnect the battery cable connected to ground.
Before working on the airbag, wait 1 minute for the capacitor in the jump starter to discharge.
Set the front wheels in a straight-ahead position so that the steering wheel spokes are symmetrical. Mark the mounting position of the steering wheel relative to the steering column trim with paint or chalk.
Remove the steering column trim.
Turn the steering wheel from the straight-ahead position 90 0 to the right. Unscrew the airbag module mounting bolt on the back of the steering wheel.
Turn the steering wheel back half a turn and remove the second bolt on the back of the steering wheel.
Put the steering wheel straight again.
Carefully lift the airbag module, disconnect the wire connector at the rear of the inflator.
Remove the airbag module.
Carefully place the airbag module with the impact plate on it (plate with soft upholstery) up.
Remove the connector of the wires of the contact module, fixed behind the steering wheel, from the bracket on the steering column and disconnect it. Note the location of the wires.
Disconnect the horn wire connector.
Bend back the steering column nut guard and unscrew the nut.
Mark the mounting position of the steering wheel relative to the steering shaft.
Use jerks to remove the steering wheel from the steering column teeth.
If it does not come off, pull the steering wheel hard while the assistant uses a bolt to "dry" hit the steering column with a hammer. Note that further attempts may damage the steering column.
If the steering wheel sits very firmly on the steering column teeth, the Opel workshop uses a special tool KM-210-A. This puller is used to press the steering wheel off the steering column.
Before installation, lightly lubricate the sliding surface of the horn contact pin.
Be sure to check that the contact module behind the steering wheel is in the middle position.
Check the middle position: turn the grip in the contact module to the right until the resistance is noticeably increased. Then turn it back 2.5-2.7 turns so that both marking arrows coincide with each other, see the picture at the top left.
With the wheels in the straight position, place the steering wheel together with the contact element on the steering column. The guide rod of the lever switch must enter the guide in the contact element.
Make sure that the needles are positioned symmetrically; the marks you applied beforehand should match.
Screw on the steering wheel (25 Nm), secure the nut by bending the lock washer.
Connect the horn contact wire connector and secure it in the recess on the steering wheel.
Connect the wire connector of the contact module and insert it into the bracket on the steering column.
Install the airbag module.
