Checking and replacing the auxiliary drive belt
Warning! On models with 1.7L engines, the alternator, power steering pump and air conditioning compressor are driven by separate auxiliary drive belts.
1. Check the condition of the drive belts along their entire length. Also check the pulleys for nicks, cracks, deformation and corrosion.
2. Remove the air filter cover.

3. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and loosen the belt tension by turning the adjuster bolt. Remove the belt from the pulleys.
4. Install the new belt onto the pulleys. Tension the belt using the adjuster bolt. In this case, the deflection of the belt from pressing with the thumb on the long branches of the belt should be about 10 mm.
5. Torque tighten the tensioner pulley bolt and install the air cleaner cover.
1.7L Engine Power Steering Pump Drive Belt
6. On models with air conditioning, remove the compressor drive belt.
7. Loosen the pump mounting bolts, loosen the belt and remove it from the pulleys.
8. Install the new belt onto the pulleys. Tension the belt by moving the pump. In this case, the deflection of the belt when pressed with the thumb on the long branch of the belt should be 10 mm.
9. Install the air conditioning compressor drive belt and air cleaner cover.

10. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the right front wheel.
11. Remove the power steering pump drive belt.
12. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and, while moving the alternator towards the engine, loosen the drive belt tension and remove it from the pulleys.
13. Install the new belt onto the pulleys. Tension the belt by moving the generator away from the engine. In this case, the deflection of the belt from pressing the long branches of the belt with your thumb should be 10 mm. Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to the required torque.
14. Install the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor drive belt.
15. Install the wheel and lower the car.
2.0L Engine Auxiliary Drive Belt
16. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the right front wheel.
17. Mark the location of the drive belt on the pulleys.
18. Use a wrench to turn the tensioner pulley base plate, loosen the belt and remove it from the pulleys.
19. Slide the new drive belt over the pulleys.
20. Loosen the drive belt tensioner and install the belt on the pulley, then slowly release the drive belt tensioner.
21. Install the wheel and lower the car.
22. Install the air filter cover.
Removing water from the fuel filter
The drain plug and pipe are located at the base of the fuel filter housing.
1. Install a suitable vessel under the drain pipe.
2. Open the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise and drain the water until clean fuel comes out of the drain pipe. Then close the drain plug.
3. Start the engine and check the fuel system for leaks.
Checking and adjusting idle speed
1.7L engines
1. Check that the accelerator cable is properly adjusted.
2. Warm up the engine to operating temperature and check the idle speed.
3. Loosen locknut to adjust idle speed (1) and turn the idle speed screw (2). After the engine reaches the desired idle speed, tighten the locknut.
2.0L engines
4. The check should be carried out annually on a heavy-duty vehicle and once every three years on a normal-duty vehicle. Checking the engine management system is performed by turning on a special electronic tester in the diagnostic socket of the system in order to check the entry in the memory of damage to the electronic control device.
5. If the engine is running normally and the engine control warning light in the instrument cluster is working normally, no check is required.
