1. Antifreeze must be present in the cooling system all year round to prevent corrosion of engine components. The coolant should consist of clean, preferably soft water and a good quality antifreeze containing an anti-corrosion additive. Make sure the antifreeze you are using is ethylene glycol based as the cheaper type (methanol based) evaporates over time.
2. The ratio of water to antifreeze depends on the degree of protection required. The minimum proportion of antifreeze at which the coolant has sufficient anti-corrosion properties is 25%. For absolute freeze protection, use a mixture containing 50% antifreeze. See manufacturer's instructions for further information.
3. The coolant should be changed every two years as anti-corrosion additives lose their effectiveness over time.
4. Before filling the system with new coolant, drain the old coolant and flush the system as described in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Make sure all hoses are securely attached.
5. Prime the system as described in Chapter 4. Remember that future top-ups must be done with the same proportion of coolant.
6. Do not use antifreeze in the windshield washer system as this will damage the vehicle's paintwork. Please note that antifreeze is poisonous and should be handled with due care.
