Because of the need for specialized knowledge and equipment to check or service the alternator, it is recommended to contact a dealer or specialist. The book only contains information on checking and replacing brushes. If the alternator does not provide the required output current, or a malfunction in the system is suspected, the following points should be checked:

• a) Check the drive belt tension as described in Chapter 1.
• b) Check the condition of the battery and connections - see. Chapter 5.
• c) Check the condition and reliability of all electrical wiring connections, if the generator is suspected of being faulty, it may be more cost effective to purchase a reconditioned unit than to repair a faulty one.
