2. The generator is driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. Cooling is provided by a fan mounted outside the housing at the end of the rotor axis. There is a built-in voltage regulator.
3. The generator ensures that the battery is charged even at very low engine speeds. It consists of a stator winding in which the rotor rotates. The rotor axis is supported in ball bearings, and the generator rings are used to transmit current to the excitation winding and to the carbon brushes and back.
4. The generator produces alternating current, which is rectified by an internal circuit into direct current, which is needed to recharge the battery.
5. Later models are equipped with a Delco-Remy "compact" series generator (see illustration). They are driven by a V-belt with an automatic tensioning mechanism. They are rigidly mounted on the engine.
