2. The generator is driven by a belt from the crankshaft pulley. Cooling is provided by a fan installed outside the housing at the end of the rotor axis. There is a built-in voltage regulator.
3. The alternator keeps the battery charged even at very low engine speeds. It consists of a stator winding in which the rotor rotates. The rotor axis is supported in ball bearings, and the generator rings are used to transfer current to the excitation winding to the carbon brushes and back.
4. The alternator produces alternating current, which is rectified by an internal circuit into direct current, necessary for recharging the battery.
5. Late models are equipped with a Delco-Remy alternator "compact" series (see illustration). They are driven by a V-belt with an automatic tensioner. They are rigidly mounted on the engine.
