Note: The test technique applies to 1.8 engines only.
1. The ignition coil is installed on the left side of the engine compartment, on the rear of the battery (photo).

2. With the ignition off, disconnect the high-voltage and low-voltage wires (photo), check the condition of the ignition coil head, sparking will be indicated by thin lines of carbon deposits. Remove the plastic cover for a more complete examination.

3. To check the primary winding, connect an ohmmeter between terminals 1 and 15 and compare the resistance with the data in the Specifications.
4. To check the secondary winding, connect the ohmmeter between terminals 1 (-) and 4 (HT) and again compare with the specified resistance.
5. Replace the ignition coil if the winding resistance is incorrect or if there are signs of sparking.
6. The ignition coil can be removed by unscrewing the hanger from the inner wing panel.
