Steering gear — removal and installation (Opel Omega A)

1. Working inside the vehicle, lift the trim near the pedals, then loosen and remove the steering column pivot clamp bolt.

2. Place a container under the steering gear to collect any spilled fluid.

3. Check the pressure and return lines, then loosen the union nuts and disconnect the steering lines. Plug the ends of the lines and the inputs of the steering gear.

4. Apply the handbrake, then jack up the front of the car and secure it on axle stands.

5. On models with ABS, remove the front exhaust outlet pipe.

6. Unscrew the nut securing the steering pendulum to the base of the steering gear, then use a suitable extractor to separate the lever from the grooves on the sector shaft (photo).

When installing, first place the ball joint on the grooves of the worm shaft, so that the hole of the clamp bolt on the side of the coupling column is horizontally on top, and the worm shaft should be in the center position. The shaft and the housing are marked as shown in Figure 10.18. Insert and tighten the clamp bolt, but make sure that the rubber cover on the steering gear is not pressed against the housing.

11. Insert the mounting bolts and tighten by hand.

12. Install the gaskets and hand tighten the upper mounting nut.

13. Tighten the upper pivot clamp bolt and steering gear mounting bolts to the torque specified in the Specification.

14. Install the exhaust pipe heat shield.

15. Install the steering pendulum to the shaft and tighten the nut to the tightening torque specified in the Specification.

16. Install the front exhaust pipe on ABS equipped models.

17. Lower the car to the ground.

18. Remove the plugs, install the supply and return pipes and tighten the union nuts to the tightening torque specified in the Specification.

19. Install the cladding on the partition.

20. Check and top up the brake booster fluid level if necessary. Install the cap.

21. Run the engine at idle, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to remove air from the system, then recheck and top up the fluid level.
