1. Apply the handbrake, jack up the front of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. Remove the front wheels.
2. To remove the tie rod, unscrew the nuts and, using the ball joint removal tool, press out the ball pins (photo). If only one rod end needs to be replaced, disconnect only the appropriate end.
3. Loosen the clamp bolts and unscrew the tie rod ends, counting the exact number of turns required to remove them.
4. To remove the central tie rod, the side tie rods must first be disengaged at their inner splines as described in point 2.
5. Loosen the nuts and disconnect the tie rod from the swingarm and swingarm using the ball joint removal tool (photo).
6. Install in reverse order using new self-locking nuts. Tighten all nuts and bolts with the specified tightening torque specification. Finally, check, and if necessary adjust, the front wheel toe setting as described in Chapter 30.
