Note: Replacing the top bearing can be done without removing the entire column, however it must be removed to replace the bottom bushing.
1. Remove the steering wheel as described in Chapter 21.
2. Remove screws and get heads of a casing from a steering column.
3. Set the ignition key to position II, press the small clamp and remove the lock cylinder spring.
4. Press the plastic clips and remove the turn signal switch and wiper switch. It is not necessary to disconnect the switch wiring.
5. Remove the spring and gasket from the inner column.
6. Use a screwdriver to remove the top and bottom fuses from the outer column.
7. Turn the switch cover counterclockwise and remove from the outer speaker.
8. Disconnect the ignition wire connector (photo), then unscrew the two screws and remove the ignition switch.
9. Install the breaker cover and push the bearing out by lifting the lockout retainers and spring contact.
10. Push in the new bearing and make sure the lockouts and contact springs are properly installed and the thrust washer is located at the top end of the housing.
11. If replacement of the bottom column bushing is required, remove the entire column and remove the rubber boot and inner column. Press the two plastic tabs and remove the insulation and bushing.
12. Install the new bushing and insulation on the outer speaker with the long tab down. Fill the inner cavity with multipurpose lubricant.
13. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
