Checking and adjusting the timing belt tension (Opel Kadett D)

The KM-510-A control device from OPEL is used to check the tension of the toothed belt. The KM-421 key is used to press the coolant pump to tension the toothed belt.

Examination

The timing belt tension should be checked on a warm engine. The oil temperature should be 60°-80°C.

Unscrew the tension bar on the generator and remove the V-belt. Move the generator down.

Remove the top timing belt cover, see item 6.7.

Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation at least 90° so that the toothed belt is tensioned. Set the piston in the first cylinder to TDC, see item 7.15.



Tensioned control device KM-510-A (oPEL company) slowly install it on the toothed belt. Light tapping with your fingertips eliminates friction in the device.

The tension hook must fit into the groove between the teeth.

Read the value of the toothed belt tension on the scale of the control device. Compare the read value with the required value. If necessary, adjust the toothed belt tension.

The toothed belt must be tightened more if the tension value of the working toothed belt is less than 4.5. On a warmed-up engine, tighten the toothed belt so that its tension is 9.0-0.5.

Note: A new timing belt should be pre-tensioned on a cold engine (oil temperature 20°C) by 7.5+0.5.

Adjustment

Loosen the water pump mounting screws.

Using a KM-509 wrench or a 42 mm spanner (to remove the generator) turn the water pump in the cylinder block. When turning the pump clockwise, the belt tension increases; when turning the pump counterclockwise, the belt tension decreases.

Tighten the water pump mounting screws to 25 Nm.

Remove the tester. Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation another 1 revolution. Finally, check the belt tension again. Adjust the toothed belt tension until you obtain a stable tension control value.

Note: If you have re-tensioned the timing belt, you must then check the valve timing and the start of fuel supply by the high-pressure fuel pump.

Install the upper timing belt cover.

Install or rotate the generator, install the V-belt.

Tighten the V-belt, see item 22.2.

Note: If you do not have a device for monitoring the adjustment of the toothed belt tension, then you can tighten or check the tension of the toothed belt using auxiliary means, i.e. the toothed belt should be tightened so that at point D (Figure B4936) with the thumb and index finger it can be turned 90°. The belt tension should be checked at the first opportunity with a test device. Before this check the engine should not be operated at maximum speed.
