The temperature sensor measures the engine temperature and reports it to the ECM. The sensor contains an element whose resistance decreases as the temperature increases. If the temperature value reaches a certain lower limit, an error message 14 follows; when the upper limit is exceeded, error 15 is displayed. In this case, the ECM uses a coolant temperature of 80 degrees as a backup value. This value corresponds to a warm engine and at low ambient temperatures and a cold engine leads to problems starting and uneven engine operation.
To prevent coolant from leaking out when removing the sensor, drain some of the liquid first.
1. Disconnect the engine temperature sensor wiring connector and unscrew the sensor from the intake manifold.
Location of engine temperature sensor

On the 1.4L 82hp engine, the sensor is screwed into the cylinder head under the DIS ignition module. On the 1.4L and 1.6L DOHC engines, the sensor is located on the timing belt side.
2. Measure the electrical resistance between the sensor contacts and compare the obtained values with the requirements of the Specifications in Chapter Fuel supply, exhaust and emission control systems.

3. If the resistance does not meet the requirements of the Specifications in Chapter Fuel, exhaust and emission control systems, replace the sensor.

4. If the sensor is OK, screw it in with a new sealing ring and tighten it 20 Nm.
5. Turn on the ignition and measure the voltage between the sensor contacts. It should be 5±0.1 V. If there is no voltage, check the wiring according to the electrical diagram (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment).
6. If the wiring and sensor are OK, then the ECM is faulty.
7. Fill the cooling system and bleed air from it (see Chapter Engine cooling, interior heating and air conditioning systems).
8. Take the car for a short drive and check the temperature sensor connection for leaks, tighten it a little if necessary.
