Removal and installation of the ABS electronic unit (Opel Astra J)

…and a 13 mm wrench for unscrewing the nuts of the brake hydraulic tubes, as well as a flat-blade screwdriver.

1. Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Use a screwdriver to pry up the expansion tank mounting clip to the bracket…

4. …and move the tank to the side without disconnecting the hoses from it and without draining the coolant.

Note: Removal of the expansion tank is necessary because it completely blocks access to the ABS hydraulic electronic unit.

5. Use a screwdriver to pry up the ABS hydraulic electronic unit wiring harness connector retainer…

7. …and disconnect the connector from the block.

8. Loosen the nuts of the six hydraulic tubes connected to the hydraulic electronic unit.

9. Unscrew the two bolts securing the hydraulic electronic unit to the bracket on the body.

10. Remove the block from the bracket, disconnect the hydraulic system tubes from it one by one, immediately plugging the holes in the block with pre-prepared plugs of a suitable size (wooden or rubber), and remove the block.



Attention!
  • After removal, do not turn over or tilt the hydraulic electronic unit too much.
  • If, when removing the unit, the brake fluid is allowed to completely leak out of its cavities, then after its installation it will be necessary to remove air using a special tester. It will not be possible to remove air from the system in the usual way using the brake pedal.


11. Install the ABS electronic unit and all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.

12. Remove air from the brake hydraulic system (see Bleeding the hydraulic brake system).
