Selected transmission mode («D» - automatic, «M» - manual) and the number of the current stage are displayed on the corresponding display of the instrument cluster (see Section 16).
In addition, the selector lever is locked in positions «R» And «N» - when the lock is activated on the panel of the selector lever, the built-in between positions lights up «R» And «R» control lamp (see illustration 23.6).
Remark: In position «N» the lever lock is activated with some delay and only when the vehicle is stationary.
To release the lock, press the release button on the selector lever.
Driving in automatic mode is the same as when using the standard positions of the selector lever on a conventional AT (see above).
To switch to manual transmission control mode, it is necessary to move the selector lever to the left from position D - gears can be switched manually by briefly depressing the lever (see illustration 23.7) to the side «+» to switch to a higher or «-» to a lower gear.
Note: Gear shifting will not occur if upshifting at too low a speed or downshifting at too high a speed for that gear - keep a close eye on the AT Mode Select Display and the current vehicle speed.
In manual control mode, when the speed drops to a certain value due to a decrease in engine speed, the gearbox automatically switches to a lower gear - when speed increases / engine speed increases, automatic switching to a higher gear does not occur. Downshifting also occurs when the speed is reduced by pressing the brake pedal.
If, when the vehicle is parked, the selector lever is not in the «R» — the control lamp of blocking of the lever on the panel of the selector lever is activated in a flashing mode. Set the gear lever to the position «R».
Note: On models equipped with the Open&Start system, when the ignition is switched off, the indication display of the selected AT mode (see Section 16) indicator will flash for 10 seconds «R», if position P was not engaged before parking or the parking brake was not engaged.
AT emergency operation mode
A malfunction of the AT is warned by the corresponding control lamp on the instrument cluster (see Section 16).
Note: On diesel models, the lamp may also come on as a warning to remove water from the fuel filter.
If the lamp does not go out after starting the engine or lights up while driving, automatic gear shifting is not possible. To continue driving in manual mode, you can use 2nd and higher gears.
Note: For some faults, only the highest gear is available.
In automatic mode (position «ABOUT») only top gear is available.
To eliminate the causes of AT failures, contact the specialists of the Opel service station.
Emergency disengagement of selector lever lock
The need for emergency disengagement of the AT selector lever lock in position «R» or «N» occurs in the event of a breakdown of the locking mechanism, as well as when it is required to tow a faulty vehicle. In addition, the selector lever may not move out of the locked position if the battery has an insufficient charge level.
If the cause of the malfunction is a discharged battery, start the engine from an auxiliary source (see Introduction). If you refuse to disable the lock for other reasons, perform the following operations:
- Engage the parking brake;
- Open the corresponding cover and remove the ashtray (see Section 17);
- Use a screwdriver to push down the yellow stopper (see illustration 23.8) and remove the lever from position P;
- Return the ashtray to its original position.
When switching the selector lever back to the position «R» «N» blocking occurs again.
At the first opportunity, contact an Opel workshop to eliminate the cause of the malfunction, or / and recharge the battery.
