On F13, F17 and F18 transmissions: The differential lower cover gasket will need to be replaced.

1. Take the car for a short drive to warm up the manual transmission to normal operating temperature.

Be careful when performing this procedure - try not to burn yourself on the hot surfaces of the power unit.

2. Switch off the ignition, set the parking brake, jack up the front of the car and place it on supports. If so equipped, remove the crankcase guard.

Transmissions F13, F17 and F18

1. The transmission housing of this type is not equipped with a drain plug. If necessary, the box can be emptied in only one way - by removing the lower differential cover.

2. Wipe the differential cover and the crankcase surface around it with a clean rag. Place a suitable drain pan under the transmission.

3. Loosen the fastening bolts evenly in several stages, remove the lid and let the oil drain into the prepared container. The lid sealing gasket must be replaced without fail.

4. After the oil has stopped leaking, wipe the mating surfaces of the cover and differential housing, as well as the inside surface of the cover.

5. Install the new gasket and press the cover onto the differential. Screw in the mounting bolts and, moving diagonally, tighten them evenly in several steps to the required force. Lower the car to the ground.

6. Fill the transmission with fresh oil by pouring it through the hole for installing the reverse light switch sensor - first disconnect the electrical wiring and remove the sensor (see Checking the proper functioning, removing and installing the reverse light switch sensor). After filling in the required amount of oil of the required grade, install the sensor-switch in place and tighten it with the required force.

Transmission F23

1. Clean the area around the drain plug and place a drain pan of appropriate capacity under the transmission.

2. Unscrew the plug.

3. Wait until the oil has finished draining, then replace the plug and tighten it to the required torque (don't forget to replace the sealing ring if one is provided). Lower the car to the ground.

4. Fill the transmission through the filler hole equipped with a plug in the upper part of the transmission case. Finally, screw in the plug and tighten it to the required force (if equipped, do not forget to replace the sealing ring).

All transmissions

1. Take the vehicle for a short drive to distribute the oil throughout the internal components of the manual transmission.

2. Finally, park the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface and check the transmission oil level (see Chapter Routine maintenance).
