Oil seals (drive shaft) side differential
Note: During the operation, you will need a tool to remove the ball joint. In addition, the locking pins of the ball joint of the lower arm to the suspension strut and the spring retaining rings of the input shaft must be replaced.
Jack up the front of the vehicle securely on stands under the drive axle, then remove the road wheel.
Drain the gearbox oil as described above in the appropriate section.
Remove the lock pin, then loosen the castellated nut of the ball joint of the suspension strut with the lower control arm.
Using a ball joint remover, separate the suspension strut ball joint from the lower control arm.
Now you will need the appropriate tool to release the inner end of the drive shaft from the differential. When releasing the right drive shaft, you can use a flat steel bar with a beveled end. On some models, the left-hand drive shaft can be even more difficult to pull out and will require an appropriate square or hex bar for the job.
Remove the driveshaft snap ring from the differential case. This may cause oil to leak even if it has been drained from the gearbox. Hang the drive shaft from a wire or rope so that it does not hang down.
Remove the oil seal from the differential case with a screwdriver (pic. 7.11).
Lubricate the sealing lips of the new oil seal with a small amount of gear oil, then, using a metal tube or a suitable diameter cartridge, slide the new oil seal onto the differential so that the outer surface of the oil seal is flush with the outer surface of the differential housing.
Place a new snap ring inside the input shaft, then push the VAZ into the differential as far as possible.
Place a screwdriver on the weld on the internal connection of the driveshaft, but not on the cover, and rotate the vase in the differential until the circlip snaps into place. Pull on the outer part of the joint to check the engagement.
Connect the ball joint of the suspension strut to the lower arm, then install the castle nut and tighten it to the required torque. Lock the nut in place with a new cotter pin.
Install the car's road wheel, then lower it to the ground and tighten the bolts on the wheel.
Fill the gearbox with oil as directed in the second section of Part A this chapter.
Drive shaft oil seal (clutch)
Remove the fork and release bearing as directed in chapter 6.
Loosen the bolts and pull the clutch release bearing bushing out of the bell housing. Remove the o-ring that is between the bushing and the crankcase (pic. 7.12).
Remove the old oil seal from the bushing and install a new one using a tube or cartridge. Press in a new oil seal, being careful, it can be easily damaged (pic. 7.13).
Fill the space between the lips of the new oil seal with lithium grease, then install the bushing with the new O-ring (must be installed dry).
Install the bushing in the bell housing and tighten the bolts.
Install the bearing and release fork as indicated in chapter 6.
