Clutch release bearing — removal, inspection and installation (Opel Astra F)

            0

Contents: Examination ⬇ Installation ⬇
Note: Before proceeding, see the note at the beginning previous section.

On models with a standard flywheel, the clutch release bearing can be accessed without removing the engine and gearbox, but the clutch assembly must be removed as described in the previous section, although access is improved with the gearbox removed.

On models with a pot-type flywheel, the gearbox must be removed to access the clutch release bearing as described in chapter 7.

Loosen the bolt securing the clutch release fork to the lever shaft.

Disconnect the clutch release cable from the lever by removing the spring clip from the threaded rod and pulling it out of the clutch release lever.

Pull the clutch release lever shaft up and out of the bell housing, then remove the clutch release fork and bearing. If necessary, remove the bearing from the clutch release fork, on some models remove the bearing from the plastic ring (Fig. 6.12).

Pull the clutch release lever shaft up and out of the bell housing, then remove the clutch release…

If desired, the transmission input shaft seal can be replaced after removing the release bearing clutch as described in Chapter 7.

Examination

Rotate the clutch release bearing and check for wear. Hold the bearing by the outer race and try to rotate it sideways relative to the inner race. If there is significant, obvious wear, replace the bearing. If a new clutch is being installed, a new bearing should also be installed.

The nylon bushings that hold the roller can be replaced if necessary (it is difficult to do this if the gearbox is not removed). Carefully tap them out of the bell housing using a suitable punch. Insert the new bushings into place, making sure that their locking lugs fit into the grooves of the bell housing projections.

Installation

The clutch release bearing is installed in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following.

Lightly lubricate the inner surfaces of the clutch release pivot shaft bushings and the outer surfaces of the clutch release bearing sleeve with grease (molybdenum disulfide).

If required, install the clutch release bearing on the plastic clamp (ring), then install the fork and the clutch release bearing together and tighten the fork bolt as required.

Install the clutch as described in the previous section, or install the gearbox as described in chapter 7, depending on the assembly conditions.

After completing the work, check the clutch cable adjustment.
