Toothed drive belt — replacement with engine in a car (Opel Omega A)

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the spark plugs (Section 4).

3. Remove the thermal-viscous cooling fan, drive belt and fan as described in Section 2. If equipped, remove the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor drive belts.

4. Drain the cooling system (Section 2).

5. Unfasten and remove the timing belt covers.

6. Turn the engine with a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt until the mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the pointer on the top of the rear timing belt cover. Also align the notch in the crankshaft pulley with the pointer on the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.

7. Loosen the three bolts securing the water pump to the block.

8. Apply the handbrake, engage 4th gear. Alternatively, and essential for models with automatic transmission, remove the starter and secure the flywheel/drive plate with a screwdriver by the teeth of the starter ring gear.

9. Unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt, then unscrew the pulley from the sprocket.

10. Turn the water pump housing counterclockwise and remove the toothed drive belt from the sprockets.

11. Temporarily place the new timing belt on the sprockets.

12. Position the crankshaft pulley on the crankshaft sprocket and insert the bolts. Insert the center bolt.

13. Secure the flywheel/drive plate, then tighten the outer bolts first, then the center bolt to the tightening torque specified in the Specification.

14. Disconnect the timing belt, align the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft pulley with the indicators on the rear cover. Reinstall the belt without disturbing the position of the sprockets, tensioning is achieved by moving the water pump clockwise.


15. Tighten the toothed drive belt, following Chapter 12, items 26-30.

16. Install the timing belt covers.

17. Install and tension the drive belt(s).

18. Install the cooling fan.

19. Install the spark plugs (Section 4).

20. Fill the cooling system (Section 2).

21. Connect the negative battery cable.
