General description (Opel Omega A)

The braking system has a dual hydraulic system for the front and rear discs. The front and rear hydraulic lines are used independently, so that if one of the circuits breaks, the remaining circuit still functions. The handbrake is driven by a cable to the brake shoes located on the inside of the rear discs, which are drums for them. The disc brakes are self-adjusting, but the handbrake is adjusted manually.

Some Saloon models and all Estate models are equipped with a deceleration-sensitive rear brake pressure limiter. The valve prevents the rear wheels from locking up by reducing the pressure on the rear brakes under deceleration.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard on some models and optional on all models. It effectively regulates hydraulic pressure to each individual brake to prevent wheel lockup. The system includes an electronic control unit that analyzes signals from the speed sensors of each wheel. The signals are compared with each other and if one wheel is detected to be rotating slower than the others, the system immediately issues a signal to reduce the pressure in the brake circuit of that wheel. The pressure is reduced until the wheel speed is equal to the speed of the other wheels. In this case, the two front brakes are modulated separately, and the two rear brakes together. The ABS system is equipped with a hydraulic line from the master cylinder to the brakes, a vacuum servo drive and a master cylinder similar to models without ABS.
