Installing the camshaft drive (Opel Kadett E)

Install the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets in place without putting the chains on, and turn them so that the marks on the sprockets are aligned as shown in the photo.

Remove the camshaft sprocket.

Place the camshaft drive chain on the crankshaft sprocket using the mark made when removing it.

Place the chain on the camshaft sprocket without disturbing the alignment of the marks shown in the photo.

Install the chain tensioner.

Install the reflectors on the crankshaft sprocket.

Install the sprocket on the camshaft without turning the shaft. Tighten the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt to 4 kgf·m.

Apply a thin layer of grease to the rear surface of the camshaft drive cover, then install the camshaft drive cover, centering the cover relative to the crankshaft sprocket.

Tighten the crankshaft sprocket mounting bolt to a torque of 4 kgf·m.

Install the oil pump.

Lubricate the edges of the front and rear crankshaft bearing caps with sealant.

Install the gaskets in place, lubricate the edges of the gaskets adjacent to the front and rear crankshaft bearing caps with the same sealant.



Install the engine oil pan.

Turn the engine over with the oil pan facing down.

Press in the rear crankshaft oil seal using a mandrel or tool S 1342.

Install the clutch (see section "Clutch").

Screw two mounting studs made from two old cylinder head bolts into the cylinder block.

Install a new cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block. Install a reconditioned or new cylinder head.

Tighten the cylinder head bolts.

Install the rocker arms and put the rocker arms in place.

Adjust the clearances in the valve drive mechanism.

Install the ignition distributor and secure it.

Install the distributor cap and connect the wires to the spark plugs.

Install the cylinder head cover with a new gasket.

Install the exhaust manifold, if it was removed, by removing the old gaskets and installing new ones; tighten the stud nuts, starting with the middle nuts.

Install the intake manifold, carburetor, fuel pump, applying sealant to the threads of the pump mounting bolts, oil pressure sensor.

Install the chain tensioner.

Attach the gearbox to the engine (see section "Transmission"),

Install the generator and its mounting bracket, lubricating the threads of the rear generator mounting bolt with sealant.

Install the generator drive belt and adjust its tension.

Secure the right and left suspension brackets to the engine, applying sealant to the threads of the bracket mounting bolts.

Pour 0.25 l of oil into the oil filter, lubricate its gasket with a thin layer of oil and screw it onto the branch pipe by hand.

Fill the engine with oil.
