You will need a ruler.
1. Without pressing the pedal, measure the distance between the pedal pad and the floor mat of the body.
2. Without changing the position of the ruler, move the pedal within the play felt by hand and measure the pedal travel within this play. The measurement difference should be no more than 3 mm. If not, replace the clutch release master cylinder or repair the pedal.
3. Without changing the position of the ruler, press the pedal until you feel resistance to further movement (free play of the pedal, during which the gap between the clutch release bearing and the piston of the working cylinder is selected) and again measure the distance between the pedal pad and the mat. The difference between the two measurements should be 6–12 mm. If the pedal free play is greater, the clutch may not disengage clearly (clutch «leads»). If the free play is too small or completely absent, the clutch does not fully engage (clutch «slips»).
4. Without changing the position of the ruler, press the pedal to the stop and again measure the distance between the pedal pad and the rug. The difference between the two measurements should be (135±5) mm. Adjustment of the full stroke and the height of the clutch release pedal in operation is not provided. Significant travel deviation from the specified value, accompanied by abnormal clutch operation (clutch «slips», «leads», jerks at the moment of starting off), indicates damage to the clutch or drive to turn it off. With minor deviations of the stroke from the specified value, but with the clutch working properly, it can continue to be used.
5. Check up the moment of inclusion of coupling at pedal release. With the engine idling, depress the pedal to the stop, engage first gear and slowly release the pedal, trying to determine at what distance the pedal pad from the floor the car starts to move. If the clutch and its release drive are in a normal state, this distance should be 30–40 mm. If the pedal travel before engaging the clutch is not within the specified range, check the following:
- free travel of the clutch pedal;
- full travel of the clutch pedal. If the stroke is less than permissible, check the condition of the clutch release drive;
- the presence of air in the clutch release hydraulic actuator. If necessary, pump the hydraulic drive;
- the condition of the clutch pressure and driven discs. If necessary, replace defective units and parts.
