Removal and installation the gearshift/selector lever base cover (Opel Astra H)

Astra Models



1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Chapter 5).

2. If equipped, remove the front ashtray from the centre console (see Chapter "Controls and operating techniques", Section 17).

3. On models not equipped with an ashtray, remove the cover of the storage compartment in front of the gearshift/selector lever. Pull the compartment upwards using two fingers on the holes in the bottom and disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the 12-volt socket.

4. Grasp the cover under the parking brake lever from behind, pull it up firmly and remove it from the center console.

5. On models with a manual transmission, use a plastic wedge to pry up the lever boot and separate it from the base cover, screw it up (see accompanying illustration).

6. Remove the 2 mounting screws (see illustration 39.5) and separate the gear shift lever base cover from the center console.

7. On models with manual transmission, disconnect the electrical wiring connectors from the back of the cover. Remove the cover from the center console, while passing the gearshift boot together with the frame through the hole in the cover.



8. On models with AT, disconnect and remove the switch from the back of the cover.

9. Installation is carried out in reverse order.

Zafira Models



10. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery (see Chapter 5).

11. On models equipped with a manual transmission, use a plastic wedge to separate the gearshift lever boot from the niche and screw it upward.

12. On models equipped with AT, remove the selector lever handle (see accompanying illustration), for which press the locking sleeve and turn it at an angle of approximately 30° clockwise. Press the lock release button on the handle and remove the handle.

Caution: Make sure that when the handle is removed, the selector lever locking drive rod is not pressed into the lever!


13. Remove the ashtray tray (see Chapter "Controls and operating methods", Section 17).

14. Using a plastic wedge, press the 2 fasteners and remove the ashtray housing from the console.

15. Remove the 2 mounting screws (see accompanying illustration). Using a plastic wedge, separate the lever base cover from the console. Pull the cover back and carefully disconnect the electrical connector.

16. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

Note: The selector lever handle is put on with the lock button pressed.
