Note: Opel is constantly improving the design and options for completing vehicles. On models of recent years of production, equipped with diesel engines, as well as a gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.6 liters, 6-speed manual transmissions can be installed - they are not considered in this Guide.
2. All boxes are fully synchronized. The transmission number is printed on the nameplate or stamped/engraved on the crankcase (see resist. illustrations).
8.2a. Identification number for F13/F17/F17+ and Easytronic gearboxes
8.2b. Manual transmission identification number F23
3. Depending on the model and layout, there are several options for converting the power flow in the gearbox - on the F13 / F17 / F17 + manual transmission, only two shafts are involved in the transmission of the power flow - the primary (leading) and secondary (day off), and on the F23 manual transmission, the flow is converted using an additional intermediate shaft.
4. All shafts of the manual transmission are located parallel to the axes of the crankshaft and drive shafts in such a way that their teeth are in constant engagement. In the neutral gear position, the gears of the secondary shaft rotate freely on it, excluding the transmission of torque to the driven gear of the final drive.
5. The choice of gears is carried out by means of a shift lever, which has a floor arrangement and is located on the center console. The gearbox drive can be made in the form of traction or cables. When a gear is selected, the drive causes the corresponding shift fork to move, thereby providing a shift along the assembly of the corresponding shaft of the synchronizer clutches that are in constant engagement with it. The introduction of the synchronizer clutch into engagement with the teeth of the corresponding gear on the output shaft causes the box to provide the required gear ratio corresponding to the selected gear. The design of the synchronizers provides the required smoothness and noiselessness to the switching. Synchronizing cones are formed by machined surfaces of brake rings and gears.
6. The compilers of this Guide do not recommend car owners to independently overhaul the gearbox. For high-quality repair of the box, a fairly large amount of special equipment will be required. When assembling, it is necessary to make a number of accurate measurements and, by selecting shims, rings and spacers, clearly set a lot of gaps. However, self-dismantling the box from the car will significantly reduce material costs.
Note: If the car is under warranty company service, find out in advance about the conditions for fulfilling contractual obligations and the possibility of dismantling the manual transmission on your own.
7. The overhaul of the manual transmission should be entrusted to car service specialists. But it must be borne in mind that repairing a box in a service station is a rather expensive operation. Therefore, you should consider replacing the failed unit with a new or refurbished one. Information on the repair and replacement of the transmission can be obtained from Opel workshops.
