At the beginning of the chapter there is a schedule of routine maintenance of the car (see Section 1). Below, the reader is offered sections devoted to a detailed description of the procedure for performing each of the maintenance procedures separately. The material in the sections includes descriptions of visual checks, adjustments, procedures for removing and installing components, as well as various useful tips and recommendations. The proposed recommendations provide for independent performance of relatively simple and not requiring special training vehicle maintenance procedures by its owner. Maintenance work must be carried out regularly in strict accordance with the description of their implementation given in the following sections, which will ensure long-term and reliable service of the vehicle. Remember that maintenance is a comprehensive program and performing only individual points while neglecting others will not lead to the desired result.
In the process of servicing your vehicle, the reader will soon see that many procedures can and should be grouped together because of their similar nature or proximity to each other. For example, if the vehicle is raised above the ground for any reason, you should take advantage of the opportunity to check the condition of the exhaust system, suspension, and steering components. Also, rent a torque wrench and check the tightening force of all accessible threaded fasteners. When rotating the wheels, also assess the condition of the brakes and wheel bearings. The first step in servicing a vehicle is always self-preparation. Carefully read the material in this Chapter, then make a list of components that require attention, prepare the necessary tools, and sketch out a brief plan for the upcoming work.
If you detect any extraneous sounds (noises), vibrations or odors, you must determine their cause. The authors of the Manual strongly recommend that you observe safety precautions when performing inspection and maintenance work on the vehicle, strictly follow the recommendations below. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in serious injury or damage to the vehicle.
Before starting work
Park the car on a level horizontal surface, apply the parking brake, move the automatic transmission selector lever to the "P" position or the manual transmission gearshift lever to the "N" position. Place wheel chocks under the car wheels. Turn off the ignition.
Before starting work in the engine compartment, turn off the engine and let it cool down.
If it is necessary to perform work on a running engine, exercise special caution! Make sure that your hands, clothes, hair and tools are at a sufficient distance from the fan, drive belts and other rotating parts. It is advisable to remove your tie, wristwatch, rings and other jewelry before starting work. If it is necessary to start the engine when the car is in a closed space (for example, in the garage), make sure that the exhaust gas exhaust ventilation system is functioning properly.
Never work under a vehicle that is supported only by a jack. Always use special stands and supports.
Do not bring lighted cigarettes, matches or other open flames near fuel containers or battery vents.
Never connect/disconnect the battery or semiconductor devices when the ignition is on.
Service of fuel filters or fuel lines on vehicles equipped with fuel injection (MFL) must only be performed by an Opel workshop. The fuel system is under constant high internal pressure, even when the engine is switched off.
Attention: Always follow the rules for disposal of used oil and/or other operating fluids, do not harm the environment!
