At the beginning of the chapter is a schedule of routine maintenance of the car (see section 1). Below, the reader is offered sections devoted to a detailed presentation of the procedure for performing each of the maintenance procedures separately. The sections include descriptions of visual inspections, adjustments, removal and installation procedures for components, and various helpful tips and tricks. The proposed recommendations provide for the independent implementation of relatively simple and not requiring special training procedures for servicing a car by its owner. Maintenance work must be carried out regularly, exactly as described in the following sections, to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle. Remember that TO is a complex program and the implementation of only its individual points, neglecting others, will not lead to the desired result.
In the process of servicing his car, the reader will soon be convinced that many procedures can, and should, be combined into general groups due to the similarity of their nature or the proximity of the nodes. For example, if the car is lifted off the ground for any reason, you should take the opportunity and at the same time check the condition of the components of the exhaust system, suspension and steering. Also, when renting a torque wrench, check the tightening torque of all available threaded fasteners. When rotating the wheels, at the same time evaluate the condition of the brakes and wheel bearings. The first step in vehicle maintenance is always self-preparation of the performer. Carefully read the material in this Chapter, then make a list of components that need attention, prepare the necessary tools and outline a brief plan for the work ahead.
When extraneous sounds are detected (noise), vibrations or odors, their cause must be determined. The compilers of the Guide strongly recommends that you observe safety measures when performing work on checking and servicing the car, strictly follow the recommendations below. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or damage to the vehicle.
Before starting work
Park the car on a flat horizontal platform, cock the parking brake lever, move the AT selector lever to the position «R» or the gearshift lever of the manual transmission to the position «N». Install wheel chocks under the wheels of the vehicle. Switch off the ignition.
Before starting work in the engine compartment, turn off the engine and let it cool down.
If it is necessary to carry out work on a running engine, be especially careful! Keep hands, clothing, hair and tools away from fan, drive belts and other rotating parts. It is advisable to take off your tie, wristwatch, rings and other jewelry and jewelry before starting work. When it is necessary to start the engine when the vehicle is in an enclosed space (e.g. in the garage), check that the exhaust ventilation system is working properly.
Never work under a vehicle that is only supported by a jack. Always substitute special racks and stops.
Do not bring lit cigarettes, matches, or other open flames near fuel containers or battery vents.
Never connect/disconnect the battery or semiconductor devices while the ignition is on.
Maintenance of fuel filters or fuel lines on vehicles equipped with a fuel injection system (MFL), should only be carried out by an Opel workshop. The fuel system is under constant high internal pressure, even when the engine is off.
Attention: Always follow the rules for the disposal of used oil and / or other operating fluids, do not harm the environment!
