Press the bearing shells into the connecting rod body and cap.
Checking the operating clearance of the large end of the connecting rod bearing
Note: When installing the piston/connecting rod assembly, new bearing cap bolts must be installed, but old bolts must be used when checking bearing clearance (after thrown out). The operation will require a tool to compress the piston rings.
Lubricate the No. 1 piston and piston rings with engine oil and check the gaps in the ring lock. The lock of the lower steel ring of the oil scraper ring should be shifted 25-50 mm to the right of the lock of the spacer ring, and the gap of the upper steel ring should be shifted the same distance to the left. The top compression ring should be installed with the lock offset 180°from the bottom compression ring lock.
Lubricate the cylinder bore liberally with clean engine oil.
Install the ring compressor on the No. 1 piston, insert the piston and connecting rod into the cylinder so that the base of the device rests on the block. After turning the crankshaft journal to its lowest point, carefully tap the piston into the cylinder with a wooden hammer handle and at the same time guide the connecting rod against the journal. Note that the arrow (risk) on the piston head must point towards the engine flywheel. The lubrication hole in the connecting rod must be on the pump side of the engine cooling system.
To measure the big end bearing clearance, follow the instructions in the previous section. If using the Plastigage thread method, make sure the crankpin and bearings are clean and dry.
Repeat the operations with the remaining piston / connecting rod assemblies.
Final installation of the piston / connecting rod assembly
After checking the gap, remove all traces of Plastigage thread from the surface of the liners and necks.
Lubricate the necks and bearings liberally and install the caps. Tighten the new cover bolts, in two steps.
After installing each piston/connecting rod assembly, turn the crankshaft to make sure it rotates freely.
Install the pallet reflector (If you want to), oil supply pipe and sump.
Install the cylinder head.
